Chemmeen Ularthiyathu /Shrimp Fry - Kerala special

This recipe is usually made with "kodam puli".Since i didn't have it, i used vinegar instead.Recipe adapted from Mrs.K M Mathew's book.




Ingredients

Shrimps - 30-35 (medium sized)
Small onions - 15 (sliced lengthwise)
Big onion - 1/4 cup (sliced)
Ginger - 1 inch (sliced lengthwise)
Garlic - 4 cloves (sliced lengthwise)
Chilli powder - 1 1/2 tsp
Coriander powder - 2 tsp
Pepper powder - 1/2 tsp
Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
Coconut slices - 1/4 cup
Vinegar - 2 tsp
Salt - as needed
Curry leaves - as needed
Oil - 2 tbsp


Method

Mix shrimp,ginger,garlic,small onions,chilli powder,coriander powder,turmeric powder,coconut slices,salt,vinegar and curryleaves.Cook this with just enough water in medium low flame until shrimp is cooked and sauce is almost dry.In a pan, heat oil and fry big onion til it is almost dark brown in color.Add the shrimp masla into this and fry till oil separates and the dish is almost dry.Serve with rice.

Coriander Prawns / Kothamalli era

My dear friend S had given me her 10 year old collection of recipes from magazine,books and tv shows.For the past few weeks i have been trying the recipes from her collection.This is the first one i am posting.This was adapted from the book , "5 star samaiyal".When i saw the recipe, i thought this is unusual combo, dals and shrimps.I am glad i tried this one.Came out really well.


Ingredients

Coriander leaves - 1/4 bunch
Small shrimp - 1 packet (brand name : sea snack)
Channa dal - 1tbsp
Urad dal - 1 tbsp
Toor dal - 1 tbsp
Whole Pepper - 1 tsp
Red chillies - 5
Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
Lime juice - 1 tsp
Salt - as needed
Oil - 2tbsp

Method

Marinate shrimp in lime juice and some salt for atleast 15 minutes.Dry roast and grind toor dal,urad dal,channa dal,red chillies,peppercorns and half of coriander leaves into a fine powder.Mix this with shrimps.In a pan, heat oil and fry the shrimp mixture.Fry till everything comes together well.Add rest of the chopped coriander leaves and mix well.

Aval/Poha Uppuma

Ingredients

Aval/Poha - 2 cup
Red chillies - 8-10
Curry leaves - a few
Oil - 2tbsp
Mustard seeds - 2tsp
Coconut - 1/2 cup (shredded)(optional)

Method

Soak aval by sprinkling just enough water for about 15 minutes.This aval i used was very thick, i got it from india.So this needed a bit more water and time for soaking up.Once aval is well soaked, heat oil in a pan.Fry mustard seeds,red chillies,curry leaves.Now add the aval and salt.Just saute for another 5-6 minutes on medium flame.Just before switching off the heat, add coconut.Serve hot as snack or breakfast.

Simple Shrimp Fry

This is one of the family favourite dish.I make sure to make this whenever i buy shrimps.

Ingredients

Shrimp - 1lb (i used frozen)
Shallots/small onions - 1/2 cup(sliced thin)
Red chilli powder - 2tsp
Turmeric powder - 1/2tsp
Pepper powder - 1/2tsp
Curry leaves - a few
Coconut oil/veg.oil - 2tbsp
Salt - as needed

Method

Thaw the frozen shrimp and keep it aside.In a pan heat oil, fry sliced onion till they are dark golden brown.(almost crispy).Add curry leaves and chilli,pepper,turmeric powders and fry till raw smell goes away.Now add shrimp and salt.Saute them in high heat for first few minutes and then reduce the heat and cook until everything comes together.I served this with 'Arachivitta sambhar' and rice.This dish goes well with rasam also.Note : This would taste better if you use fresh shrimps.

Shrimp/Chemmeen thoran

hi all, this dish i made few weeks back but didn't have energy or time to post it.Now a days started feeling little better, so thought of posting all which was on hold..:)).So here is the first one..

Ingredients

Shrimp - 15- 20 (jumbo)(chopped)
Coconut oil - 2tsp
Mustard seeds -1tsp
Urad dal -1/2tsp
Curry leaves - as needed

Grind to coarse paste

Coconut - 1/2 cup ( shredded)
Small onion - 1
Green chillies - 5
Ginger - 1 inch (chopped fine)
Garlic - 2 pods (Chopped fine)
Turmeric powder -1/4tsp


Method

In a pan heat coconut oil, and splutter mustard seeds, urad dal and curry leaves.Add the grounded paste and fry till raw smell goes.Add shrimp and salt and cook in medium heat until it is cooked well and is very dry.If you are using small shrimps, then no need to chop them.

Kadai Prawn with potato

Today, the whole day i am trying post this recipe, but blogger wouldn't let me.And i couldn't visit any of other blogs or neither could i post comments.Did any of you go thru this?.Anyways finally at 10.30 pm , i could finally log into my account.So before blogger hangs up on me again let me go straight to the recipe....

My Cousin sis used rave about this dish alot.Whenever i talked about prawn, this is the only dish she kept on saying.So this sunday, i decided make this dish and called her for the recipe.Amazingly she was also making this one..:)..well i guess wise women think alike or may be we are just women thinking all the time about food n' food only..:))


Ingredients

Shrimp - 10-12 (i used cooked frozen ones)
Potato - 2 medium ones (cut into small cubes)
Onion - 1 (chopped fine)
Perunjeeragam/Fennel - 1 1/2 tsp
Ginger garlic paste - 2tsp
Turmeric powder - 1/2tsp
Red chilli powder - 2tsp
Dania powder - 1tsp
Curry leaves - as needed
Salt - as needed
Oil - 2tsp

Method

In a pan, heat oil and fry fennel and curry leaves.Fry onions till golden brown.Once onions are fried well add gg paste and fry.Add turmeric,chilli and dania powders.Fry well till raw smell goes.Add potato,salt and mix well. Cover and cook till potatoes are almost cooked.Now add shrimps and cook till almost all gravy is evaporated.(There won't be much of gravy since we didn't add any water).Since i used cooked shrimp, i added it alomost at the end.If you are using fresh shrimp,you might have to add it bit earlier.Serve hot with rice/roti.

Shrimp curry

After a long time i came out of my same old shrimp recipe..wow..am i glad i did that.This shrimp curry recipe i got from the site pachakam.com.It is a drooling recipe with a goan touch.A must try..


The original recipe didn't mention how many red chillies, so i used 10.
